What Are We Here For?

yash-raut-771434-unsplash.jpgI’ve questioned the reason for me being alive for many years. I always search for a calling and chase the path that seems to lead me towards a better understanding of my purpose on this planet. I was very happy to read that Dr. Yuval Noah Harari, my favorite author, has a similar way of looking at life.

When Mole Hills Become Mountains

So many “adults” that I know worry about the most insignificant things. They stress out about forgetting to run the dishwasher at home. Sometimes the thought of going to a meeting with bosses and other colleagues is too overwhelming. Perhaps the waitress forgot ranch, and that’s enough to cause an uproar. I get stressed about the little things, too, don’t get me wrong. However, when I really take a moment to think about life and the big picture, I realize just how silly it is to worry about things that are out of my control.

I’ve had the privilege of having several extended vacations or periods of being out of school and out of work. During these times, I’ve been able to really let my brain do its thing. It never ceases to amaze me how many questions I have. I’m encouraged that I am still inspired to learn about the world. How can I stress over missing out on a buy one get one deal when I’m too busy trying to figure out why humans even exist. It is so freeing to leave the little worries behind and look at life from a macroscopic lens.

What’s the Point?

As Dr. Harari makes clear in his book “Sapiens,” it isn’t exactly known what our purpose, as homo sapiens, is on Earth. Our evolution is by coincidence as far as we know. I would like to believe that there is a reason for homo sapiens. Our ability to imagine and create societies, governments, and relationships around the globe has to be purposeful. I also believe that we can find our purpose if more people are open about wanting to find the answers.

I strongly believe that many people out there ponder our species’ existence. There are people that are searching for answers to questions that haven’t even been asked yet. There are people out there that are passionate about finding his or her own purpose. If you’re one of those people, leave me a comment. I’d love to hear your perspective.
